Before the era of Prohibition, the spirits industry was largely defined by whiskey. Two Chicago entrepreneurs, Oscar Getz and Lester Abelson, were deeply involved in this field. Following the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, they re-established their business and founded Barton Brands. In 1944, to secure a consistent supply of whiskey, Barton acquired the Tom Moore distillery located in Bardstown, Kentucky. This distillery had previously produced neutral spirits for the military during World War II and was transitioning back to bourbon production. Oscar Getz, known for his vibrant personality, had a profound appreciation for the heritage of American whiskey. His passion led him to collect whiskey memorabilia, culminating in the establishment of a museum in Bardstown, which remains open to this day.
Today, Barton Brands operates several facilities, including Barton Brands of MD in Lansdowne, MD, Barton Brands of California in Carson, CA, and the Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown, KY. The distillery offers tours six days a week, inviting visitors to explore its rich history and production processes.
