Scotch and rum might sound like an odd couple, but The Glenlivet makes a convincing case. The 12 Year Old Jamaica Edition, nicknamed "Treasure Beach" after the laid-back stretch of coastline on Jamaica's south shore, was the very first release in Glenlivet's "Beyond Speyside" series, and it's the reason the series exists.
The recipe starts with the Speyside classic: 12 years in traditional oak at the distillery George Smith founded in 1824. Then it moves into casks that previously held Jamaican rum, picking up a tropical personality that's hard to resist. It comes in a bold, colorful bottle that looks as good on a back bar as it does in a beach bag.
In the glass, coconut and juicy pineapple lead the way, with hints of mango and green apple. The palate brings tropical stone fruit layered over velvety caramel and vanilla, and the finish is smooth, fruity and easy. It keeps the gentle, approachable style that made Glenlivet 12 famous, just with a vacation tan.
Sip it neat or with a drop of water to bring out more of that coconut. It also makes a fantastic highball with pineapple soda or ginger beer, or swap it into your favorite rum cocktail for a Scotch twist on a tiki classic.
Released in limited quantities, the Jamaica Edition is an easy pick for rum drinkers curious about single malt, and a fun change of pace for Scotch fans who already have the standard 12 on the shelf.
